Ready for a Sustainable Future

We have set an ambitious target to halve our Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and achieve Net Zero by 2050. Our Scope 1 and 2 emissions will be the easiest to reduce in the short term as we have direct control over these and our Scope 3 emissions will require a longer timeframe to tackle, and the milestones that we are developing will be both measurable and achievable.

Our target is underpinned by our signature to the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge that was submitted to COP26 in Glasgow, and which has also been signed by over 400 of our peers and stakeholders across the industry.  As well, as commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, the pledge also commits us to:

  • Publishing our pathway
  • Collaborating with our partners, suppliers and customers to drive change across the value chain
  • Measuring and tracking out Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
  • Reporting on our progress

How we’re getting there

Drawing on our industry association, UFI’s, reports and our own benchmarking studies, there are five key areas that we will be focused on addressing to achieve our targets:

Energy

How our events can be powered efficiently and use renewable energy sources.

Production & Waste

How we can redesign our events with a focus on using sustainable materials and eradicating waste.

Food & Food Waste

How we source sustainable food options and eradicate food waste.

Freight & Logistics

How we can move goods efficiently to, from and around our shows and transition to net zero emission logistics.

Travel

How we can work with and influence partners in the travel sector to reduce and mitigate emissions from travel to events and from business travel generally.

Our progress to date

Here are some of the initiatives we are introducing to help us along our pathway to Net Zero:

  • A sustainability working group to bring together a broad range of stakeholders from across the business to discuss sustainability initiatives and how to implement them, as well as a dedicated central resource to co-ordinate our sustainability efforts.
  • A detailed internal roadmap to Net Zero with milestones for each of these key areas looking at our short-, medium- and long-term objectives and how we will achieve them.
  • A sustainable event management plan for each of our events in 2024 and beyond.
  • Supplier engagement strategies, procurement policies and methodologies for collecting detailed emissions data for our Scope 3 emissions, in particular.
  • Offering sustainable stand and shell scheme options at many of our events.
  • Implementing a carbon accounting platform that will allow us to benchmark our emissions, track hotspots and trends and measure our progress against our milestones and targets.
  • Implementing tools to track attendee travel emissions and allow opportunities for attendees to offset.
